Frequently Ask Questions

  1. What kind of reel-to-reels do you transfer?
A: All quarter-inch reel-to-reel tape recorded mono, stereo, half-track, 2 track, and four track mono.

  2. Will I be charged if there is nothing on my tape?
A: No. If you want the tape back there will be a return shipping fee of $8.00.

  3. I don't know what is on my tapes, so I don't know if I want them transferred. What  can you do to help?
A: With our free preview service we can email you short samples taken from your tapes. If you decide you do not wish to have tapes transfer after hearing the samples there is no charge at all.

  4. How many tapes fit onto 1 CD?
A: First, a CD can only hold 80 minutes of audio. So as long as a reel-to-reel tape is under 80 minutes it will fit on one CD.  In many cases, a reel-to-reel tape is longer than 80 minutes. This depends on the size of the reel, how much tape is on the reel, the speed the tape was recorded at, the thickness of the tape, and, how the reel-to-reel tape was recorded. (Mono, stereo, 4 track mono, both directions .) These factors all play into the over all length and quality of your tapes final transfer. Of course you do have the option of having your reel-to-reel tapes transferred to CD, DVD or flash drive as data.

  5. What is "Sticky Shed" and could my tapes have it?
    A
: Sticky Shed Syndrome is a condition higher quality tapes from the  70's and 80's can have. Usually, if your reel-to-reel tapes were not recorded in a professional studio, you don't have to worry about sticky shed. If they were, and if they do have Sticky Shed, we will bake your tapes at no cost to you.  After the baking process the tapes will be as good as new. If you think your tape might have sticky shed, do not try to play them! Playing tapes with Sticky Shed without baking them will ruin them. Tapes by the brand "Ampex" commonly have Sticky Shed. Tapes originating from a studio or radio station commonly have sticky shed.

  6. Do you sell reel-to-reel decks?
    A: No. You can try
A-V Specialist. They also repair decks.

  7. Will my finished CD have track markers?
A: Yes. Track placement is determined by the technician who edits your audio. NOTE > If you  have classical music or opera transferred your track markers may not be correct. We do not charge for nor guarantee track placement. Just audio transfer quality. When playing your CD from start to finish you will not know where tracks are. (No space or gap between tracks.)

  8. How much audio can a reel-to-reel hold?
A: That is not so easy to answer. Reel-to-reel tape decks did not have just one speed  like cassettes. They played from 1-3/8 inches per second, 3/34 inches per second 7 1/2 inches per second and more. Then, if that's not enough, there was many different sized reels. From 3" to 10.5". Each holding more tape. But wait, one more thing, thickness of tape. Some companies made very very thin reel-to-reel tape and bragged about how much more for your money you could get. And some made thicker tape and bragged about quality. Oh but wait, there was many different ways a tape could have been recorded: Mono, stereo or four track mono or a combination of stereo and four track mono. See, tapes had sides. Side 1 and Side 2.  Then they have tracks. Left and Right Side 1 and Left and Right Side 2. A person could have recorded on left and right together for stereo recordings, or use left and right separately for four track mono. So to sum this up, it is really impossible to predict how much audio is on your reel-to-reel tapes. That is why we charge by the reel. Weather your tape takes 6 CD or 1 to hold all of the audio it is going to be the same price. No surprises.

  9. Do you offer a bulk discount?
    A:
    Yes, 10% after15 tapes. 15% after 25 tapes.

  10. How long does it take?
A: First I would like to say we are always willing to work with your deadline. So if you have a special need please call us and let us know and we will work with you. We enjoy helping people make an occasion special for a loved one. Now the standard answer: 1 week. If you have many tapes it could take longer.

Determining What You Have

Reel to reel tape (or open reel tape) came in many shapes & sizes. The most common to the average consumer was 1/4" tape. Reel-to-reel tape also came in other sizes but was reserved mostly for the professional recording market. To determine what you have, simply measure the  tape, the actual tape not the reel. It should measure 1 quarter of an inch in width. (Not thickness). We transfer all 1/4"  reel-to-reel tape to CD.

 The Reel Size

Next, reel-to-reel tape came on many different sizes of reels. Most common among these are 3 inch, 5 inch and 7 inch. Larger 10 1/2 inch reels were also made but not as common to the home user. Recording studio demo tapes and radio/ television programs more commonly used these sizes. Here at Curtis Media Transfer  we transfer all reel sizes. To determine what size reel you have, lay it down on a table and measure across the surface of the reel as close to the middle as possible, as if you are measuring a plate. Your measurement may not be exactly the measurements above but it will be very close to one of them. (See photo) Pricing here at Curtis Media Transfer is based primarily on reel size. Reel-to-reel tapes that are not full of tape are priced by how much tape, not how big the reel is.

Determining The Cost

We charge by the size of the reel...period. So the price according to the size reel you have plus return shipping will be your total cost for transferring your tapes.

  • 7 inch reel-to-reel is $40.00

  • 5 inch reel-to-reel is $35.00

  • 4 inch reel-to-reel is $30.00

  • 3 inch reel-to-reel is $25.00

Return shipping is $8 for the first tape and fifty cents for each additional tape.

So if you sent 2 three inch reel-to-reel tapes:
$25 X 2=$50 plus $8.50 for return shipping: Total $58.50

You do have an option to buy:

  • Copies for friends and family ($7 each)

Shipping 101

Now for shipping. First we want you to know right up front that no reel-to-reel tapes have ever been lost in transit to us or from us. Also, after we digitize your reel-to-reels for the first time we keep a digital copy of your reels on hard drives here for 30 days. This means if something was to happen on the return trip or you needed additional copies, we could simply pull up our back-up files and remake the CDs.

Also, when you fill out your order form we receive an electronic copy right away in our email. So we know who is sending what. If something doesn't arrive in a timely manner we investigate.

Safe Shipping Tips:  We understand sending your irreplaceable reel-to-reel tapes to us for transfer can be a scary task. With a few steps of caution your reel-to-reel tapes can arrive just as safely as driving them across town. In over 13 years of doing mail order business we have never had a clients reel-to-reel tapes lost or damaged in the mail. The purpose of this information is to share with you what we have learned over the years. These are not just our opinions.

  • Do not use envelopes of any kind to ship your reel-to-reel tapes. They are prone to rip open during delivery. This includes the Priority envelopes the post office gives out. It seems like the logical choice for just one reel-to-reel or small reel-to-reels but please refrain. The post office will give you free boxes when shipping Priority mail, use them.

  • Do not use "Media Mail". "Media Mail" is a form of third class mail the post office uses for shipping books, tapes and other forms of media. Your reel-to-reel tapes would qualify for this type of transportation but we do not recommend you use it. Considering what you are mailing, this is no time to pinch a penny.

  • Do not forget your Return address. Please make sure you have supplied a legible return address on the outside of the box. You should also have our order form on the inside of the box with your contact information. It is important to have an address on the inside and the outside of the box. If something was to happen to the box that left the outside label unreadable, the shipper will open the box and look for a shipping address inside. It is very common for clients to forget to include the order form. So please, don't forget the order form or at least a sheet of paper with your return address.

  • Use Priority Mail. We highly recommend the Priority Mail service offered by your local post office. They will even supply you with a free box. This is a great way to ship your tapes. In most cases your tapes will arrive to us in 2 days. The less time your tapes have to travel the better.
