Frequently Ask Questions

  • What kind of reel-to-reels do you transfer?
All quarter-inch reel-to-reel tape recorded at any speed. We transfer all head configurations including  mono, stereo, half-track, 2 track, or  four track mono.

  • Will I be charged if my reel-to-reel tape is blank?
No. If you want the tape back there will be a return shipping fee of $9.95

  • I don't know what is on my reel-to-reel tape, so I don't know if I want it transferred. What  can you do to help?
With our free preview service we can email you short samples taken from your reel-to-reel tapes. If you decide not to have your tapes transferred after hearing the samples there is no charge at all other than having your tapes returned to you. And that is optional.

  • How many reel-to-reel tapes fit onto one CD?
First, a CD can hold 80 minutes of audio. So as long as a reel-to-reel tape is under 80 minutes it will fit on one CD.  In many cases, a reel-to-reel tape is longer than 80 minutes. This depends on the size of the reel, how much tape is on the reel, the speed the tape was recorded at, the thickness of the tape, and, how the reel-to-reel tape was recorded. (Mono, stereo, 4 track mono, both directions .) These factors all play into the over all length and quality of your tapes final transfer. On average a 7" reel takes 3 CDs. This is just an average from data we have collected over the years. Of course you do have the option of having your reel-to-reel tapes transferred to flash drive or external hard drive. Remember we do not charge more if your reel to reel takes more than 1  CD. Keep in mind that copies or duplicates are charged by the disc.

  • Will my finished CD have track markers?
Yes. Track placement is determined by the technician who edits your audio.

  • Do you offer a bulk discount?
    25-35 10%
    35-50 15%
    50-100 20%

  • How long does it take?
First I would like to say we are always willing to work with your deadline. So if you have a special need please call us and let us know and we will work with you. We enjoy helping people make an occasion special for a loved one. Now the standard answer: 14 days. If you have many tapes it could take longer.

Testimonials

Determining What You Have

Reel-to-reel tape (or open reel tape) came in many shapes & sizes. The most common to the average consumer was 1/4" tape. Reel-to-reel tape also came in other sizes but was reserved mostly for the professional recording market. To determine what you have, simply measure the  tape, the actual tape not the reel. It should measure 1 quarter of an inch in width. (Not thickness). We transfer all 1/4"  reel-to-reel tape to CD.

 The Reel Size

Next, reel-to-reel tape came on many different sizes of reels. Most common among these are 3 inch, 5 inch and 7 inch. Larger 10 1/2 inch reels were also made but not as common to the home user. RecordingHow to measure your reel to reels studio demo tapes and radio/ television programs more commonly used these sizes. Here at Curtis Media Transfer  we transfer all reel sizes. To determine what size reel you have, lay it down on a table and measure across the surface of the reel as close to the middle as possible, as if you are measuring a plate. Your measurement may not be exactly the measurements above but it will be very close to one of them. (See photo) Pricing here at Curtis Media Transfer is based primarily on reel size. Reel-to-reel tapes that are not full of tape are priced by how much tape, not how big the reel is.

We use only 100 year archival, professional grade CD & DVD media.

Duplicate CD's for family & friends.

If you would like to get extra CD's to share with friends and family they are only $7.00 each. Also, if you want to make the copies yourself go ahead, we do nothing to your CDs to prevent you from making your own copies.
